Those wishing to join the GOC who wish to keep their personal details private are not allowed to join the club, is this the way to promote the club and hence cost the club membership fees.

Re: new members
I’m a new member, so I’ll put in my tuppence worth - although I’ve been in a few clubs and been on the committee of another for over 7 years. My name and address has been in that Club’s magazine for all that time with no negative consequences at all. I look at joining a car club as equivalent to going down the pub with some mates. Swapping opinions, asking for and volunteering information with people with common interests- being part of something in other words. I don’t go to the pub wearing a balaclava and refusing to tell anyone my name or where I live.

Re: new members
Well said Ian.
If CEP joined the club, he/she would find out that the sharing of data will only be so that local organisers etc can contact local members.Without this the club cannot thrive.
Personally, I don't believe in hiding behind pseudonyms etc-my login name is obvious!!

Re: new members
Well said Ian and Tony,
I too am a member of two other clubs and on the committee of another and I too have never have anything negative feedback due to my details being available.
I am sure the club will survive without the subs from one secretive would be member.

Re: new members
For the information of CEP and others, I have been a member of the GOC for over 40 years.
My name has appeared on membership lists that were sent to local organisers in the past, (before data protection started) with telephone numbers and addresses, plus car registration number and type-I have some of these lists from the seventies and eighties.
Perhaps CEP is on one of these?

Re: new members
Tony,
I am still living in Kent as you suggest and at the present I am listed as the local South London Group contact. What you and others, who do not agree with my comment about data protection, do not understand is the fact that some people may, for very good reasons, not wish their details to be circulated. One reason could be that they are on a victim protection scheme or they may have a sensitive occupation which could be compromised if their address etc. was published. To stop those people from joining or renewing membership is not in my view what a so called friendly club should be doing. I hope that most members would be inclined to join in with any local events but we have at least one member living in our area who does not want to become involved but still wants to be a member and receive the Rarebit, I don't know why that person does not get involved but that is their choice and not for me to question.
CEP (You know my other details.)

I appreciate your point of view, however if local group organisers don't have some contact information for new members, how do they encourage them? In this area we have a number of members who don't wish to join in, however our organiser still contacts them (by email) in the hope they may turn up. We can only hope!!
I am very cautious about giving my email address away, but accept this is probably the best way of communication.
