Gilbern GT prototype?

Postby mookaloid » Fri Apr 03, 2009 12:53 am

Hi folks, Just dropped in to say hello and ask if this car looks familiar to anyone?

I saw it on the telly tonight and to me it looks a bit like a Gilbern GT with a prototype front end on it. I might well be completely wrong but if anyone knows what this is I would be very pleased to know.

Many thanks

Mark

This came as a big surprise to me as well as I have a friend who is rebuilding one. It was on a program on the History of Caravanning, and the car is an Ogle One Point Five. They only made 7 before going on to the mini based Ogle SX1000 (which my friend also has plus 2 Unipower GT,s). The Ogle 1.5 has the Riley 1.5 engine, gearbox, rear axle and front suspension. The Riley 1.5 front floor pan is welded to a space frame (similar to a Gilbern) to carry the Ogle rear suspension and fibreglass
body.

Just a small bit of other info....

My best friend at primary school wax Max Karen.....nothing special in that I hear you say.....well his father was Tom Karen of Ogle design! I didn't know this when I was that young, and we had great fun playing in the plywood mock ups that we placed around their very large garden at their Victorian Villa house in Ashwell Herts. Our best one was the mock up of a fire engine cab, complete with wooden fire extinguishers and firemens helmets! Happy days. You were always welcome in his design office at home, seeing the plans all over the place. He'd stop everything to chat and entertain you with his swiss accent. Lovely Guy.

I saw a couple of years ago that he turned up at a Scimitar event.

I remember seeing the lovery Ogle Mini at the NEC a few years ago. That was a nice looking design.
