starter motor & no electric

Postby blue1 » Tue Apr 28, 2009 8:41 pm

I thought I had experienced the worst but pleasure and pain of classic car ownership hit me yesterday.

The starter motor did not stop when I started my car and then when I switch the ignition off it would not stop and then I lost all electric.
If someone offered to take the car away they could have had it. I was fuming as the day before it driving beautifully and I got a lot of looks on the road.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

Not sure about the no electrics but the running starter motor sounds like the solenoid is getting a continuous live. I have very old memories of something similar on my Mk2 and the ignition switch getting so hot it almost melted the vinyl of the Genie style dash. There is no guarantee that an ignition switch will always fail in the same way but might also explain a total lack of power, so worth metering this out first.

Break the job down to set tasks.
All power to the fuse boxes, is picked up from the solenoid.
There are two circuits, one pre-ignition and one control by the ignition switch.
Once you have reliable power on the ignition disconnect the switch/sender wire at the solenoid and then splash it with a wire from the battery to confirm the solenoid starter circuit is working correctly.
