Engine colour

Postby Tree man » Fri May 22, 2009 9:31 am

Although I have had my Gilbern for all of a week and not having skinned my knuckles for at least a month I couldn't resist the urge to remove the engine. I was thinking that while I was at it I might paint the engine and so was wondering if there is an official Gilbern engine colour. It's a Genie by way and I need to do some pre competition fettling in case you think I'm doing it for fun (it's all fun isn't it ?? :D )

As its a Ford engine I assume it should be Blue. Is that right?
Regards,

This might help: http://www.duplicolor.com/products/colors/highheat.html

I painted mine Ford Red, which looks very orangey at first but darkens with coats and age.

I was looking at some Gilbern advertising recently (whilst trying to find some paperwork on the Genie, or at least that's my excuse) and in the colour brochure for the Mark III, the engine is shown fully dressed, but out of the car. What you can see of the block is painted gloss black. In the Burtons catalog, their illustration of the Essex is painted a metallic turquoise.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that Gilbern were buying the engines through the 'industrial engines' distribution channel?

When the 4.0 was being rebuilt, the builders specially mixed a light grey, as they were of the opinion that all Colognes should be light grey, but the Burtons illustration shows it in black.

I suppose that really, as long as it looks good in situ, that's all that matters, and anyhow, if you buy some of Reg Alia's spiffy valve covers, no one is going to notice the block in any case.
