Cill repair/repacement - floor pan cutting
Hi,
Does anyone have any info on where to cut the floor pans on a MK1 to access the cills for repair/replacement? I have read Phil’s excellent article but as this is my first glass motor I am stuggling in the confidence department on where to make those all important cuts in the floors. Any advice, pics or drawings would be very helpful.
Regards, John.

John,
Go to Wickes and buy the very very thin angle grinder cutting blades. You may like to give Phil a ring and get him to talk you through it.
I'm not familiar with a GT so it would be wrong for me to comment but my main learning is try and cut each floorpan out in one go and avoid the temptation to cut them up into sections like I did.
The floors flex an awful lot an you need to approach pulling them with confidence .. lots of grinding and scraping noises !!
Thanks
Chris

Re: Cill repair/repacement - floor pan cutting
Thanx Chris,
That is the type of advice I am looking for, pretty sure I would have done it in sections. My car is an Invader MK1 by the way. Have access to an air grinder with cutting disk that cut the view holes in the cills fairly well but will look into the wickes disks as my compressor does struggle to keep up.
Still hoping someone out there has a plan drawing/template or something that shows where cuts are best made.
regards, john

John,
Sorry not sure why I thought you had a GT. If you log in and go to the 3 Litre section and look for Genie Project there are some pictures of my Genie which as far as floor pans are concerned identical.
This picture sort of shows where to cut ..

Where in the country are you ??
Cheers

Once again thank you Chris,
I am in Caerleon, south wales. I have been unable to enter any of the other forums since joining the club, message reads that "I do not have the required permission to read topics on this forum", any ideas, should I have access as a club member, whats the trick.
Regards, John

The closed forums are "members only", so unless you supply your membership number in your profile page. I have to attempt to match the email address of tag names to real members.
If you are a member and are still missing out, let me know with details.

Re: Cill repair/repacement - floor pan cutting
I have been looking at the pictures on flickr of a couple of resto's and cant quite work out why so many parts of the care are cut/sectioned. It isnt obvious from the pictures, but the only place the shell looks to be entwined with the chassis is around the bulkhead.
It looks like cutting the shell across the the floor inline with the bulkhead chassis brace, which goes through the tunnel, anf following it all the way around the door pillar/hinges etc, under the screen, would allow the shell to lift and leave the bulkhead there. OR am I missing the bleeding obvious!!!

Re: Cill repair/repacement - floor pan cutting
John,
1) The front inner wheel arches are bonded to the outer shell and then all the way around the front bulkhead.

2) The "Inner tub - all the floorpans + the inner bulkhead (including where the door hinges hide) are also bonded.
Not very clear but on the right of the photo below .. look for the bulkhead metalwork.
You have to be able to slide the outer shell over the door hinges so need to wriggle things ...

3) Once you've cut along the sills around the rear bulkhead and boot the whole out bodyshell has to be pulled out at the front bulkhead and "peeled" off the inner shell. Very noisy and you think the shell will go bang !!

It actually pays to think very carefully before cutting. I had to repair some nasties so had to remove the front bulkhead. It's a real pig to rebuild. I've seen photo's of it being lifted out in bigger pieces than I had. Once you have a cut you also have a gap to fill in later ... hindsight is a lovely thing !!
Hope this helps ..
Chris

Thanks Chris
Major work then all round. Must have absorbed a lot of hours on assembly at the factory, in the first place, to juggle all the bits together.
Needsto consider whats been done on any purchase I might make.
Makes scimitars easy in comparison as the shell lifts off in one piece. Either car gives you the GRP itch
