Painting a Gilbern

Postby Fred » Sun Sep 12, 2010 6:01 pm

I am in the process of respraying my Genie, the first time I have ever attempted this. Someone said to me last night, in the pub so it might be total rubbish, that you can't use cellulose on glassfibre bodies, they have to be sprayed using two-pack. Please tell me ths isn't true as I've already bought cellulose paint.

No it isn't true ...

You can happily use celly, in fact 2 pack didn't really become avaialiable until the mid 70's and into the 80's, so before that all cars were painted in celly ..

I am just in the process of painting my Estate and have put pictures of the work on here in several threads or you can check my flikr page listed at the bottom of the page to see some more pictures, and that is all in cellulose as well..

Hope it all goes well, let us see some pictures of before and after.

Best of luck

Grahame

Thanks for the response, just started looking at your pics wow you've done some serious work there. It all looks fantastic, mine is a smaller scale job. I will upload some pics as soon as I get some time.

Hi Fred,
I`ve just recently painted my estate in cellulose,so who ever said that you can`t was talking twaddle.I sprayed mine first with a product called Spruzo, which is what they use on fibreglass baths !!2 coats of this,1st coat dry flated and then the second coat(takes 24hrs or so to cure per coat).Next I sprayed the car with cellulose primer and then the top coat.Overall there`s probably 13 or so coats of paint on her.Left to cure for a couple of weeks then wet flated using 1200 grade wet`n`dry and then with 2000 grade. Then using G10 cutting compound cut the whole car then polish away.Click on the link to see my car.http://photobucket.com/gordav65
