GRP repair & supplies

Postby Gilbern74 » Wed Oct 29, 2008 12:59 pm

Hi
Haven't found much on here to do with the good old GRP and peoples experiences making repairs or using it for customising various aspects of their cars.
So thought I'd start a topic just for that... come on, there must be lots of you who've got their hands dirty using this stuff.
Unfortunately I haven't, but intend to soon.

I was browsing for any decent suppliers and came across several using Google searches. I intend to initially make minor repairs or fill in gaps and strengthen certain bits of the body.
Ulimately I might need to make changes that require some customised sections out of GRP (I'm thinking here about maybe creating a custom mould to encase a new petrol tank that sits at the back of the boot. this would require that I cut out the rear section of the boot allowing a new tank to sit further back. The new mould would encase behind the tank and be re-attached to the back-boot section. Obviously allowing enough clearance from the axle movement below it....although this might never happen depending on what tank design I get sorted).

So please go ahead and share your GRP artistic endevours, photos, success and failure stories, and hints and tips for all to learn from

BTW, on searching for suppliers I have so far come across these co's which seem reasonable so far:
CFS Fibreglass (Cornwall)
East Coast Fibergalss Supplies (Tyne & Wear)

Any in Cambs/Lincs would be appreciated!

I did notice, after checking Frost's website, that their Fibreglsss supplies are almost twice as expensive as those above!! So it pays to look around.

I use CFS Redruth, Cornwall all the time, they are always willing to have a chat and give a bit of free advice.

Never had any problems with any of their products, and was trying to talk them into a bit of discount for the club, so if you do use them mention its for a Gilbern.

On this topic of fibreglass mouldings the "Duct" moulding from the grill to the radiator on my MKIII has been chopped about by previous owners and needs replacing. Does anyone know if this section is available? Most replacements I've seen seemed to be frabriacted from sheet metal of various types
Regards,

Derek

I have ordered a load of GRP supplies from CFS.
As Grahame mentioned they are very helpful. A guy called Alex gave me assistance in choosing the right stuff to start out with.
I'll update with my achievements assuming my fingers don't get stuck together.

Give Roger Spares a call. If he doesn't have one, he may know who has or how to get one. :|
