I have only known one Mk3 that had no or had lost its chassis number plate, but on most Mk3s it is on the nearside chassis rail adjacent to the coil but some as illustrated by Derek are on the other side. Perhaps a little more research will reveal if this is consistent and age related i.e. before or after a certain chassis number. Id correct Derek's chassis is 30098 and as shown while mine at 30104 is by the coils as are many later cars .

Or, perhaps it was just a case on of Jones always puts them there, but Morgan does it different!

my best knowledge of it goes like this, when it went for its first mot , the mot guy refused as it had no id number anywhere, the previous owner had to have it stamped in the side of the upright on the drivers side door post , which it sits on a metal plate, he then mot,d the car when he saw the plate. but if there is one that the mot guy didnt spot, where will it be?

Let's have a little thread discipline. I have split these post off original New Member post (which only concerned Mk3s) and re titled it in order to attract the right responders.

On a slightly different tack. On the original post, one particular poster to the thread has used a very large image as a signature that only serves to show how over pretentious signatures can brake up the flow a thread and would much prefer the use of avatars.

As I have not found any way to enforce a size limitation on signature images, the only option seems to turn off this feature but have no wish to be that draconian. So we will try a little 'self regulation' and see if I have better luck then Mr Brown did that.

Hi Craig
I've only ever seen the number stamped on the nearside top frame member, adjacent to the oil filter.

Hope this helps, you could always have a new plate made up with your number on it welded in this position for any future MOT inspections, saves telling them where the other one is all the time.

Hi Craig,
This is the 3rd Gilbern I've owned [Genie, Mk1 & Mk2] and not one of them came with a chassis number, anywhere. So it's more than likely it came from the factory without one.

Richard.
