My Dad owned one of these.....

Postby Reddi-Eng » Mon Oct 12, 2009 10:06 am

Reading Ferdinand's "History of Invader Estate GVO 682 K" posts it struck me that I expect we have all had that moment at shows etc. when someone comes up and says "My Dad used to have one of these" or similar.

Up to now I've usually shown interest but conversation usually moves on to more modern topics. I expect some do but perhaps we need to explore the that pervious ownership more and find out a bit of more of the marques history. Perhaps a handy "Contact Sheet" in the glovebox to pass to the guy and say "Any chance of you getting some details".

I think at the NEC show in November we should have a "Did You Own A Gilbern" banner with a comments book handy.
Regards,

Derek

Derek

Champion idea..

It would also help capture the non member owners as well...

I know of some non member estate owners, and sadly have found they are often more forthcoming with info and pictures than some of our membership.

It all goes towards the history files the historians are keeping, I already have details of nearly 400 owners for the 100 odd Estates in my records, with a load more to find.

Hoping to get to the NEC if I can get a reasonable train fare, will you be there???

Since owning my Gilbern at virtually every event I've been to (sprints and hillclimbs) somebody has come up to me and said I used to own one of these, gratifyingly it's very fond memories.
At Shelsley Walsh a very glamorous lady said she learnt to drive in a Genie and beamed from ear to ear when she sat in the drivers seat for the first time in 30yrs. At the same event a man came up to me on the start line and said he used to write the adverts for the company and how nice it was to see them still being competed
At Harewood somebody told me of when he used to work in the factory and for cars for competition put MG twin cams (in GT's?) and a big american V8 in Genie - which he said was a bit too much  .
If it's not past owners reliving years gone by it's other people, who having seen the car, wish they could be a new owner, often ignoring the more expensive and exotic machinery nearby.
Not many car companies can say they get so much positive feedback

Another hobby of mine is Bellringing. On Saturday we went on a bit of an outing, ringing the bells at three churches and we went in the Gilbern for a ride on a nice day out. At one tower I was asked to teach a new guy and on walking to the church he saw the car and said 'oh, a Gilbern Invader......MkII isn't it' ! You could have knocked me over! Out in the flat fens of Lincolnshire to have someone not only know it was a Gilbern, but a MkII also, is pretty rare. It turned out he was a classic car buff and had one at home, a MkII. Now I've not heard of a member who lives about 6 miles from me before, so guess he's not actually a member.....YET. I'll see him again soon as I teach him to ring.

How about a section online for people who've either owned a Gilbern or worked at Gilbern. I was at a show in Bournemouth a year or so ago, and a lovely couple told me numerous stories about when he worked at the factory.

Next time, i'm taking a video camera and going to film all these snippets for our new GilbTV section, when/if it happens!

Nothing stopping you having a bit of practice now and posting your clips onto You tube, which i've started to do. Then when/if we get a film clip section we can always send them into gilblog too! :D

If there's any credit flying about too for gilbern video posting on you tube, i think you'll find my post was a year ago at National day 2008,in Cardiff castle, unless you count someone playing 'keepy uppy' called Gilbern.....

keep on posting i think your prescott clip and waynes clip spurred me into wanting a camera mount now and i've seen some at about £10 for a cheapy on ebay too, beats having your son trying to keep the camera steady on the dashboard!!!

You could use pre-addressed postcards. They cost next to nothing if you have 1000 or more printed - 5-10p each, even with a Gilbern pic.

Also a fundraiser (?)

Have you thought about a "Gilbern" group on Flickr? Currently lots of pics, but no group.

Ferdinand

We have our own group on here, why do we need another :?:

I know we've had a few comments over out dated stuff on here, but if you have noticed, things are happening.......
'what's new' page has gone........
Racing page has some new stuff on it, or at least stuff I've not noticed before.....
Visitors book is free of all the American blog rubbish......

Things is a changing.

Looking through other minor club sites, a big draw is always the 'members cars' page. I'm sure we will get one of those on here soon.
Paul is working behind the scenes on the site structure, but these things take time.

Patience, and I'm sure we'll all have what we want on here. :D 8)

It's gone on my page as well...

Perhaps you need to refresh your pages, or just that the alterations take longer to reach down under
