What did you do today?

Postby R_D_Olivaw » Sat Aug 06, 2016 10:16 pm

Hi Everyone,

If I actually owned a Gilbern I would have entitled this what did you do with your Gilbern today, but as I don't I've opted for a more general name, but the idea is to share with other members what you got up to, whether it was to take the car to a show, give it a spring clean, change the brake pads, etc.

I've decided to kick this one off with my trip to Goodwood today where I had the opportunity to meet up with Brian and have a good chat about all things Gilbern (thanks Brian), and of course watch him gunning his car around the track.

Goodwood for me & a couple of mates, nice to see Brian campaigning the old charger
and the weather was much better than last year (or was it the year before...?)

Interesting to see a guy in a McLaren Spyder getting strongly challenged by a BMW
saloon - both doing under 90 seconds for the 2.4 miles, which is awesome though
not as quick as they could be, as forty years ago a friend managed 95 seconds in
his 1-litre Sunbeam Stiletto

I should have been at a classic car show at Higham Ferrers but following the failure of a relatively new Facet electric fuel pump on Thursday and being low loaded home, I fitted a secondhand (assured taken from a working engine) mechanical pump on Friday following a chance purchase on Ebay. This failed yesterday and I had to be low loaded home again. Happy days!

Now here's a funny story. In my quest to find out more about the Mk3 Invader I contacted a local Gilbern enthusiast who very kindly took me out for a drive. One week to the day I'm now the proud owner of the car, which I'm sure many on this board will recognise as Nick Vandervell's.

My plan wasn't to buy a Gilbern until next year so the car will be laid up until next spring when the plan is to visit Phil Ivimey for another long talk about the car and what needs to be done to preserve it for another 44 years.

A big thank you goes to Nick who passed on the custodianship of the car after 40 years of ownership.

Ref. Nick Vandervell: Is he the guy who had the 'Mongoose GT' back in the 1960s?

(A V8 Tuscan with the front bodywork changed, which made it look like a right
monster!) It was featured in Cars & Car Conversions magazine.

Bloody hell, never thought Nick would sell it, fastest Mk.111 ever up Wiscombe. I trust you are going to get yourself a competition license? Just got back from a very wet Wiscombe, but hey still still 2 seconds faster than last year, so I am a happy bunny.
