but can we have a peek at other members cars on here , obviously its down to if the members would allow the photo to be used, or if not could all the posters who are on here , could you show us your gilberns ? without any written typed script , id luv to see mk1s,2s,genies, altho everybody has their own favourite,

I think that most of us that come on here have posted various pictures of our cars ... except of course your good self Craig ...So come on start the ball rolling and post a load of your car and I'm sure the rest will follow.

You can always see my car on Flikr, the address is always on my signature...

But a suggestion to the web admin .. what about a gallery page on the main site of members cars??? Then they can be better managed.

A "Members Gallery", that sounds a good idea

I'm sure most of you know but just in cas you don't, if you go to the Google home page, click on Images in the top left then type in "Gilbern" you'll have lots of Gilbipics. :D :D

I did the Google search routine, and found a picture of myself sitting in my (now-ex) GT, presently owned by Michel Vock in Switzerland (is that close enough to France for you, Arnaud?)

I believe that Roger Spares is working on a collection of photos of every Gilbern still in existence, if you haven't sent him photos, please do. I don't know if this is intended to have a wider distribution, or just for his own satisfaction, but if Paul can teach him to upload, you never know what we might get...

What about setting up a fickr account for the club and using that as the photo archive?

Cars, events, members etc.

Should be easy enough to pull the contents back into the Gilbern website etc.

Will post an update on the GT soon. Chasey straight, engine back in, new front (section) going on next.

We have a "Gallery" on the main club web site, could this be opened up in some way show members cars?

Our friend Tony Stanton's Rochdale Owners Club has a Owners cars section, see http://www.rochdale-owners-club.co.uk/owners.htm, which is a nice feature and could be the model for ours.

Perhaps if it needs to be regulated in some way this should be the way in which the Model Historians publish the results of their work. In that way a consistent template could be used. Sequenced by Chassis number would give an idea of known v's unknown cars. (Could be the answer to one of the questions being raised at the AGM :) )

Food for thought.

Derek

To mix a few metaphors; I have been chewing the cud on this fodder for many years, but tire of trying to spur life from dead horses and instead, as with Rarebit, have to rely on the small stable of willing ones.

You will note that the page mentioned, is not 'opened up', members are requested to make submission to the webmaster for inclusion.
This was the original idea of the Gallery page, but - after some 10 years - with no contributions, I decided to review events published in Rarebit to just add some topical colour.

Com'on Paul nil carborundum illegitimi, you're amongst friends here :)

If the answer to the question, "Do we want a Gallery of Members Cars?" is Yes, then what's the best way do do it? The more I think about it the more I think it brings together several of the threads of questions I proposed for the AGM.

If we have a core of a hundred members on the forum lets start badgering each for a picture of their car(s). (We got a dozen in a thread late last year without much effort). If we get committee encouragement for the forum then more members means more pictures. If we get buy-in from the model historians then that's more basic data about each car. If the membership sec. gets involved then membership renewals can also request more car related data and even photos. If Rogerspares shares his data etc. etc.

I don't know exactly what cross reference data we have but if we have Chassis number to Registration number lets scour the Google Images and put pictures to chassis numbers. To be honest I can't remember a request from you for input to the Gallery (I'm not saying you have'nt made requests but perhaps newer members have not seen them). I've sent details and photos to the model historian, it will be interesting to find out how much data they have. Thats why there's a question on this for the AGM.

One of the common failings with all organisations is when you get to the point where you hear the expression, "No we tried that 10 years ago , it did'nt work then, it'll never work!". Times change, that's what makes this new fangled Forum such an opportunity for the club. We had to do it at Aston Martin where I worked. in the 1990's it was a "traditional" car maker making 100 cars a year and a loss. Now with new technology it made 6000+ cars in 2008 and was profitable.(And the cars an better)

By all means we don't have to open the Gallery up to uncontrolled updates, but with pooled resources it need'nt all fall on your shoulders. Electonically help is available. The glass is half full not half empty!

PS. It must be something about Tuesdays that get me on my soapbox
PPS. You may want to move this thread to the Member Bar :)

but arent we missing the point slightly gents, we already had a photo board at national day with the pics, so sureley its only a case of getting permission from those owners on wether they allow the photo to be used, then put those onto our homepage, we dont need photos , there already in existance,,we need the permission to be used..and when you think of it this way , if you say 10 years of rarebits thats 120 cover shots at least, of members who were proud to show us their gilberns .

Craig,

I dont think it is that simple. The display boards at National days from memory contain more about the history, car manufacture, the factory, racing etc. All very interesting but another story (and another question for the AGM - How do members get to see archive data?)

Rarebits cover photos will give us lots of pics but relating them to current cars/owners is more difficult. One cover photo for example was of a GT my brother owned in the 1960's.

My view is we need an up-to-date catalogue of current cars and perhaps what happened to cars that did not make it. It needs to be a living record that changes and gets updated as time progresses.
Regards,

Derek

Interestingly, you dont need permission of the car owner or anyone appearing in it to publish the picture.

The rights of the picture belong to the picture taker, not the subject. (Have taken a lot of photos for newspapers over the years).

But I digress...

As the Estate Historian, I have written to people, I have e-mailed people, I have spoken to people, I have written articles for Rarebits, I have put request on here for pictures of cars, old, new what ever. I have offered to the cover the cost of having old photos copied, I have offered to do all the copying for people, and out of the all the 80 or so estate owning current club members, only 4 have sent me something.

I have got most of the info I can get, and have collated about 60% of it so far, but unless other people help by sending me some stuff, there is not a lot more I can do.

I wonder how much is in the archives about Estates that I dont have copies of???

I have no issue with any of this.
My point is I've tried advertising different parties, both for here and Rarebit, but if nobody comes you do somethings else!
If, there is now, a new initiative fine. If any member be they a mk historian etc. is willing to collate a body of material I can use it.

Hi All,
Just thought I would tell you we have the same problems in the Rochdale Owners Club. We have about 100 members but only 8 regularly use the Forum.
The Owners car section should have over 120 photos on it, but can you get the members to send photos :- NO.
I did a Rochdale calendar for 2008 and needed 12 photos of member’s cars, I received 8 so had to find 4 in my records and then struggled to sell 50 at cost (£5.50 each) so I did not do one for 2009.
I wonder why some of the members own a Rochdale if they cannot take a more active part in the club.
Well that’s my moan for today, looking forward to meeting some of you at Stoneleigh in May.
Ps Just for the record I have lived in Reddich for 6 years and Derek lives 3 roads down the hill from me and we had not seen each other’s cars till last year.

Kind regards
Tony
