Engine and Gearbox came out today..

Postby Camo » Fri Jan 14, 2011 4:57 pm

Took the engine and gearbox today, only problem was the propshaft bolts which didn't want to know so had to disconnect it at the back axle and pull it forward but then found the rear flange won't fit through the chassis section in the middle of the car !
Had to rethink the stubborn bolts and finally got then loose...
Time for some wire brushing !

All looking quite saveable at the moment...

Penatrating oil can be your best friend when trying to strip anything this old down :D :D

Hope everything else goes as well for you...

P.S. ... Keep all the pictures coming....

Camo, good to see you are making progress.
It is amazing that the nearside engine mount is still in one piece, these are usually rotted by oil from the rocker cover or torn apart by engine torque.
When you rebuild I would recommend a stabilizing third engine mount, as in my articles exposing the Mk3 in rarebits - they are all on the achive disc.

The propshaft length problem is also a common one on the Mk3. I have to release the axle on one side to clear the bolts. Then slide the prop back to lay over the axle until the gearbox is removed, again this is in my articles.

The subframe to chassis flexible brake hose looks fairly kinked too - presumably this is to be replaced anyway.
I also note you have the double coupling type lower stearing column, the more common type is cut with a 2" extention welded in and this later type may well now be failed at MOT. In either case a proper length lower column is now available from the Granada, but there are different flange types so check with spares to make very sure before buying.

regards
Paul

It is interesting that you mention a welded column on the Mk3 Paul ..

I have recently recieved some MOT failiure sheets for a MK2 Estate, and back in 1981 that also failed an MOT for "Steering - Butt Welded Column (Not Satisfactory)"..

Any other Mk2's affected by this or just a one off???

Had some more fun today, took the gearbox off the engine and the clutch, clutch is very good condition but will need a new rod from the slave to the pivot arm, maybe a nice chrome one
To be honest most, if not all of the bushes are in great condition but right now there is no money so all I am doing is taking things apart or cleaning....oh for some money
Currently have a Daimler for sale which will fund the start of the restoration but it keeps needing repair... very frustrating !

Hi Stu ..

If you end up replacing the rod from slave to pivot, I know somebody who is looking for an old one...

See, we will recycle just about everything on here ... We are as green as our pages

Alas the securing nut did not want to come off and the last inch or so of the rod came off with the nut !
I will try and use it myself or have to source a replacement.

I have been having some fun lately, progress is good but slow, been having to spend time of my Disco and Daimler in the last few weeks, Daimler is now sold, Old Disco died, so new Disco purchased and some tinkering required as always but here's some Gilbern photos..

couldn't resist these wheels for the rear, perfect as new mint Revolutions to match what I already have but slightly larger :0

I love them

May need some work on the arches....

Also Got another V6 recently as it came with working carb, starter, alternator etc....plus Chrome bits )
Turns out the carb is a manual choke, very pleased with that :)
