Tubes or not?

Postby andyderbyshire » Sun Oct 26, 2008 5:57 pm

I wonder if anyone can help me.

I'm just about to replace the tyres on my standard wheels and the garage has said that they should really have tubes in. They advised that tubes could give more punctures but that there is no safety lip in the standard wheels so under hard drving the tyres might ride off the wheel.

I'd like to keep the standard wheels but am doing up the Geanie for historic rallying so has anyone experience of using standard wheels in hard driving.

Should I swap to miniltes and know I've got safe tyres but spoil the orginal looks of the car.

Many thanks
Andy

Andy,
I use my Genie for historic rallying and over six days in Iceland I only had to pump the tyres up once, they all lost a few psi. Both rear tyres show wear on the edges due to wheel spinning on the tests but although I was throwing the car about I didn't have any other problems. I was seriously thinking of fitting tubes BUT if you get a puncture they go down quicker than non tubed tyres also modern tyres are not design to tubes inside (the inner walls are too rough so can cause chaffing). So I've settled for no tubes and check the tyre pressures regularly

Thanks Mike, Glad you had a good time in Iceland it looked like a fun event.

I've opted for the non tubes and it seems ok. The loss of the low profile tyres has created some fun wheel spinning and slidding which was harder to provoke before.

Not sure what your plans are for the future but I was thinking of some HRCR and Hero events next year.

If you live anywhere near Sheffield and would like to catch up for a beer we could exchange notes and mods.

Tyres and wheels...

Postby Gilb » Thu Mar 12, 2009 6:01 pm

Well my search for huge 13" tyres for my Mk III has proved spectacularly unsuccessful. I mean, why don’t people stock 235/60 on 13” anymore??!!??

This opens up a new quandary which I would like your help with… what new wheels should I get.

Today’s hankering is something like this if I can get the fitting right:

What other wheels do people like on the Mk III – open to all views!

I am old fashioned and prefer the look of Minilites or similar (Superlite), but always avoid Wolfrace (a throwback to my Scimitar days) as I do not like the quality. In case you need to know I have bought a stock of chrome alloy wheel nuts with standard Ford chamfers at a reasonable price-check out next months Rarebit for details - if I remember to put it in!"
