Genie-G1107 Restoration

Postby GGenie69 » Tue Apr 07, 2009 1:23 am

I’ve started, so I’ll finish, (Magnus Magnusson 1929-2007)

The engine is all finished, the front end rebuilt and I thought what next? What direction? Where to from here? Then I found rust in the chassis!! Direction decided, body off and on with the show.

Read up on all I could in the archive disc and magazine articles and started cutting away

I striped off all the fibre glass over the rivets with a chisel and bought a reciprical saw for the steel chassis and panel joins

Image

I read it was a 4 person job to lift the body off, but could be done with 2, I was going to ring my brother in law to help me, but, before I knew it, the body was off  so it can be done by 1 person :o

Yes I belive it is Grahame, but it's not rusty so may not be the original one

3 of the top outlets go to the screen de-mister vents, the other 2 go to the eyeball vents and the outlets on either side go to the crude footwell vents.

Hi GGenie,
Looks like an excellent job. I would like the photos in 'The Gilbern Collection' but do not know how to get them off the Gilblog and into my pictures folder. Any chance of emailing some to me at my official email or my home one gilbeynut@talktalk.net Cheers

Roger! Place the mouse cursor over the picture, click the right button (on the mouse) and from the menu that pops up choose Save Image As - select the location (on your hard drive etc.) and Save

Another day(weekend) at the office(shed) :)

Image

Finally finished welding up all the old rivet holes, including the ones from a previous floor removal :!:

Whilst researching this body off malarky I came across an article in Rarebit where Philip says to drill all the pop rivets out to stop them rolling around in the chassis tubes. I found this impossible as the drill just pushes the centre in. I propose to squirt some thick gearbox oil into the tubes when I redrill to fix the body on, hopefully this will capture the loose rivets and stop them rattling around

Next up grit blasting the chassis before repair.

All looking good ..

What about injecting Waxoyl into the sections, that solidifies and would stop them rolling around, also stop further rusting from the inside.

Off to the garage again myself later this morning.

I did think of waxoyl Grahame but it's not easy to find here. I suppose you get that in a country that never puts salt on it's roads :D hence my thoughts on thick oil.
