Another milestone in the ongoing resto

Postby Greybags » Fri Sep 12, 2008 4:33 pm

Well at last I can put the MIG away and start concentrating on the bodywork, as just completed the last section that needed welded repairs.

Just a couple of gallons of Waxoyl to spray and that's the underside completed (I Hope)

Well done Graham, without doing a full body off restoration it,s very difficult to evaluate how much the chassis has deteriorated over the years. Our Mk3 had already had a floor pan removal some years before, alot of the existing chassis had been replaced but unfortunately key areas like the ladder sections missed. I will complete the interior restoration in the next few months, got some good materials from Woolies trim who supply most of everything you need to restore, tooling etc. at reasonable prices. After Christmas it's engine & box out for a complete front end rebuild & finally respray, anyway keep up the good work

Chris ..

What are you using for sound deadning?????

I was wondering about the rubber/aluminium foil stick on stuff rather than the thicker wadding type material..

Any suggestions .. anyone...

Hello Graham,
i used the standard sound deadening felt from Woolies Trim. Had to basically cut paper templates for the floor sections & glue with adhesive. Also ran some new wires for the rear speakers before laying the carpet. Unfortunately all the original carpets were discarded during our garage rebuild so refitting proved a bit more tricky & time consuming, trying to have the least amount of joins & seams in view. I started with the largest area that being the tunnel, had a local upolstery firm bind all the carpets in black which was done for a very reasonable price. The result is very good, shall post a few of the interior shots when i get the car out on the weekend,
Chris

Chris ..

Have you cut your own carpets, or used one of the sets from Mats for cars ... http://www.matsforcars.co.uk/carpet_sets/category2_c.php?c1_id=63&c2_id=89

Trial fitting of the front bumper this weekend. I have used Dolomite bumpers as they are more plentiful.

The rear was a direct swap, but needed to to fabricate new brackets for the front. Was able to use a set of rear bumper brackets with a 60mm spacer, dont look bad but still need to get them level this morning.

Also got the numberplate surround fitted as well.

Another tick off the sheet of things left to do, as least it is getting shorter as it now fits on just 1 page of A4.

Hi Graham,
i purchased the carpet on the roll, then tried to minimize the number of cuts & joins visible. Working from the tunnel outwards which is obviously the largest section & also taking care to have the pile running as symetrically possible on either side! Not so easy when you are cutting in the footwells etc.

Also having to modify the rear seat area to suit, i wanted to mount the more modern inertia seatbelts from above on the roll-bar

I wasn't aware you were able to buy carpets as a set for the Gilbern, but i'm generally happy with the results so far

After i complete the carpets my next challenge is the headlining, that front bumper really looks the part by the way :)

Love that carpet, really does look the dogs doodahs ... do you want to come and do mine, as the carpet and headlining/sunroof are the two things I am totally dreading doing..

Do those seat tilt forward for rear access, as they look quite comfy..

Where did you get those great "Gilbern" door plates they are well cool... could really do with some of those as well..

Sorry for all the questions..

You going to have to post a lot more piccies...

The seats are Corbeau Classic, unfortunately they do not tilt forward. I prefer to sit more reclined & have the seat all the way back, with the roll-bar also it's not really an option to have "back seat drivers!" I've also had to make up a steel subframe to align with the original Gilbern runners.

However they are comfortable & as most mk3 owner's know it's difficult to find a narrow "retro" style seat like the originals.
The cill plates came with the car so can't help you there, i've ordered a single 12 gallon ally tank from a farication specialist i reckon they would be able to make up some stainless or ally covers, but with the Gilbern patent i'm not sure unless they were sourced through the club.
The carpet is Hessian backed & more pliable then you would think, i can always send you some more detailed pictures of the patterns i used. The Headlining i think will be the next headache (excuse the pun) & maybe not get it perfect 1st time but will keep you up to date with the progress,
CHris
