Re: Paint Colours
Hope nobody else objected to me going off on a tangent , just trying to inject a little light heartiness in reply to my mate Paul.
Hopefully i 've already been helpful in my research into the colours available at the time in my earlier postings. Good luck Grahame with whatever your choice of colour you eventually decide on. I've seen many gilberns painted in more modern colours which have really suited them.

Re: Paint Colours
Andy thanks for the pics ..
It certainly looks effective, but dont think it's still around, unless someone knows better, as it would certainly be easier than sticking a roof on ...
Gareth ..... Tangents are what these places thrive on ...
Lime Green ...groovy????? A child of the psycadelia age perhaps????

Colours............
During another dreary day in the office my mind has wandered to the topic of what colour I'm going to give my car.
I have kind of decided it will remain yellow, and I've trawled through the internet looking at all different kinds of yellow!
The original colour was 'Renault' yellow. No doubt easy to obtain in a can at the time.
Here are some of the yellows I came up with for starters:
solar...
toucan...
canary...
giallo fly...
millenium...
saffron...
inca...
and there are no doubt many more!
i am quietly taken by the Giallo Fly Yellow, but since it seems to be predominantly on Lambo's, Porche's and Ferrari's it's going to be a bit pricey
Anyone have a good sporty yellow that I can look up?
Further on the subject of colours, I removed the black vinyl roof and decided I don't want to replace it. But I'm not convinced the black sunroof that remains goes with a yellow painted roof, but is better suited to dark colours to make it more obscure (I've no plans to remove and 'fill in' the sunroof)
So the other option is to change the colour completely with this in mind....any thoughts on a better colour to enhance the sporty nature of my Mk3 Invader?? Red is out. I like red, but there's a beautiful red Mk3 out there already that I have no competition with! I still like the yellow.

Re: Colours............
Actually 'Fly Giallo' is the Ferrari house colour. Rosso Chiaro, blood red, is the Italian national colour, and was always used on the competition cars.
Also, I don't mind black as a colour for the Britax sunroof, on any colour car - I have never seen a fabric sunroof in any other colour.
My first Mark III was repainted in a brown metallic (Datsun, as then was), which was lovely with the black sunroof, and I can recommend it as a combination. if you PM me with a real E-mail address, I'll try to find a photo to send you. The car went to a fellow who was going to strip it and repaint another colour, so it's not like you are going to see a lot of similar ones.
I have been considering colours for one of mine that needs a respray; I have been leaning toward a Nissan colour called Sunrise Copper, with a black vinyl top (to go with the fabric sunroof), but after the palaver I've had getting the Genie resprayed in original Gilbern Red (which, it has to be said does look pretty indistinguishable from maroon) I may drive it the way it is for a while. Assuming I ever get to drive it - it needs a total rewire before it turns a wheel again.
The 'best' red I've seen was a really saturated colour on a Mitsu Evo; but all the colours are mixed to spec from DuPont (or whatever) base colours, so ought to be about the same money. The 'best' yellow is the Renault colour on their F1 special model Clio... but that is one of those iridescent flip-flop colours, and I have no doubt it will cost like you were buying the Renault F1 Team entire...

Re: Colours............
Oh, one thing I forgot to mention - I used to have a Corvair Corsa painted 'Fly Giallo' ( I worked for a Ferrari shop at the time), and it attracts coppers like nothing else I've ever seen. There was one particular gent (and I use the term very loosely) who made it his life's work to pull me over every time he saw the car.
When I had the Mustang, it was painted a medium grey metallic, and was completely beneath their radar for 15 years I had it...
Apparently, when they are bored, they play 'snooker', and since there are no grey balls on a snooker table, it would not have counted in their game

Re: Colours............
I've seen the fabric sunroofs done in Tan, and that may suit the yellow, or a friend has just had his sunroof recovered by a local car upholstery place, and they have done it in a dark blue to mach the paint.
It would seem that you can have them in any colour that the upholsterer can get the vinyl in.
There use to be a fantastic "Chrome Yellow" around in the 70's, but be dammed if I can remember what make of car it was.
If you want the Fly Giallo, it shouldn't be any more expensive than other paint as as long as the mixer has the "recipe" for it they will blend while you wait.
In fact if you go to your local paint supplier, they will mix any colour you want. The local company I used mixed a load to match a paint chip off my MG, so that it would match allowing for the aging and fading of the existing paint, and then gave me a print out of the recipe so that any one could duplicate it if I needed more.

Re: Colours............
Hi Jason
My MkII is painted with Honda Yellow, code on tin is Y1.
It's a very yellow yellow, if you know what I mean, certainly stands out! So look out for a modern Honda to see the colour, but watch out you don't mistake it with the metallic yellow they also do, it's got a sort of grey tint to it.
As to the black sunroof....all my chrome has been painted black, wheels are silver rims with black centres and it has a definate 70's look to it, so I'm happy with it. Black interior, black cills, black chrome, black wheels, yellow body, coooool
Wayne.

Re: Colours............
How about good old Ford Daytona yellow- correct period certainly! Both my Escorts are painted in it, but naturally they are not the same shade
As all yellow car owners will relate, flies are a nightmare as they are drawn straight to it. I had a Porker factory painted in the brightest yellow ever (better than their 'Speed' yellow) and took it to a sunny PCCGB meet. Within minutes it looked as if it was covered in black dots!
Giallo Fly or Fly Giallo is worth it for the name alone
Good luck, Mike

Re: Colours............
Some good responses and food for thought. Thanks chaps!
Certainly the Giallo Fly is worth investigation. As Mike mentioned, the name alone is rather sweet!
Ford Daytona yellow is easy to obtain which is a plus but from some pics I've seen it seems a little on the pale side for my tastes.
The Honda yellow looks great in this pic.
Chrome yellow looks the nuts on this Mustang
From looking up the 'yellows' as I have been, it's clear that there are slight differences in each colour of the same name.
So the only way to get the one I want will be to get one made up and test it out, probably on the inside of the boot lid.
Do you think any Ferrari owner would mind me taking a chip of his Gallio Fly paintwork to a paint shop
Regarding the sunroof, I will certainly investigate whether it can be re-done in a different colour, but I'm not confident, or at least I think it will be a big (unnecessary) expense. I like the idea of a tan top to go on the yellow car. But I can live with black. As far as colour co-ordination goes I think I would have to add more black into the overall scheme to compensate. Maybe a more black-ish interior, or going back to that Mustang, a couple of black stripes down the middle
