Craig..

As the Estate historian, I have published all the facts of the estates left on the road, still existing etc on here several times before.

I would suggest you contact Gareth the Mk2 Historian who should have all the same details for the remaining Mk2's on the road etc ..

When you speak to him and get all the details, one of you can post them on here ..
His details are on the back cover of Rarebit.

Would love more details of the organization it was suggested you contacted about car numbers.

Hi Craig,

If you found those details in a 90's Rarebit, quote the page and we could go straight to it on the archive dvd. Might help people bring it up to date

Some figures were quoted at the AGM and hopefully these will be repeated in the report of the AGM in Rarebits.

Also discussed at the AGM was the fact that we have "Model Historians" working to trace and identify cars of each type. These guys should be you first port of call however I haved asked without yet getting a clear reply as to how and when this data is to be published to the membership. Perhaps a 1/2 page table each month in Rarebits showing "Made", "Known To The Club", "Scrapped", "On Road", "Off Road" etc. would be a good starting point?

Derek

the rarebit mag wasnt as old as i thought, august 2000 edition, volume 15 number 8 .. the article is on page 8 and was written by a gentleman by the name of alan smith............. what a fascinating read......on the previous page theres facts about the 3 ltr engines used in gilberns,, around 4 -5 different ones

the thing as already pointed out in the past derek is that
all historians and comitee members will hold down full time jobs, with a busy lifestyle gathering the info can take lots of time,
it may make more sense to free up their time and use people like the dvla to help
i did have a conversation with someone who was going to post me some literature from an organisation about car numbers left,
needless to say it never arrived
it may well have been the gilbern owners club she was talking about

i think one of the most important figures we can work on is cars "scrapped" and those "abroad" just having those two facts will give a little clearer picture
as a for instance ...........if there were 209 mk 3s made and 10 went overseas and 9 have been scrapped then at least you know you have no more than 190 in the uk.........that could be a starting point for all models,

tracing cars through membership can be difficult as some will rejoin some may lapse their membership.. etc etc
as my uncle frank always said" it never rains in the tap room"

Numbers made are quite well known, known to the club is fairly easy, On the road (taxed) is extremely easy, Off road is (made minus taxed), so no problem, even those abroad is reasonably well known, but the problem one is scrapped.

It can be guessed at by the last taxed date, but unless someone tells us they have scrapped their car, as far as I know there is no way of getting this info. Not everyone declares it to the DVLA when they scrap a car, they are just left to rot after failing it's last MOT, or one is broken to keep another on the road, and not reported to the DVLA.

I'm not sure that a monthly report would be worth it, as since last August I have been told about only 1 new Estate on the road, but how many have been taken off the road???

I dont think the figures will change that much to need doing monthly.

I check the DVLA pages every year to see how many Estates are taxed, and I presume the other historians do the same. With all the other details I have and are passed to me during the year, with a couple of clicks of the mouse, I can produce just about all the figures you want to have.
I think just once a year would be enough to provide a overall picture of the state of the cars. I shall continue to produce the figures for the Estates and I have asked the other historians if they will do the same, It will only take a few minutes to put them all together in a chart and then send it to Paul to print.

I was'nt proposing any more work than the Historians are doing now, just a table of results in Rarebits of whatever data you are collating. I know it won't change much from month to month but if its always there its always just to hand and available to all members.

Possibly add it to the web site as well?

PS. I sent my £5 off to the DVLA months ago and have nether got anything back?

Derek ...

Mine took quite a while from the DVLA, and in the end I gave them a ring, the lady was most helpful, checked they had my request and advised there was a back log, took another couple of months after that..

It's no work at all to print them out from my database, as I said it is just a click, but I'm not sure how the other historians keep their data.

I have often wondered if there should be a sort of "Central Collation" for all the stuff the different historians have collected, with a common database so that info is easily and readily passed between each other and easily compiled, as at the moment the club doesn't know about non member owners, but I have several cars which I have complete ownership histories for including non members.

Looking after just the Estates, which is possibly the smallest group within the club, I already have over 800 data entries, 300+ documents and 250+ photographs, all collated for each car, not including magazine articles, and other press stuff, and I've only been doing this for a relatively short time, and I know there is more out there within the club that I have not got copies of as yet, and there are cars to which I have no info at all. So the other Historians must have thousands of bits each as they have larger vehicle numbers to deal with.

And no I dont spend all my time doing this, usually a couple of hours first thing on a Sunday morning when the wife is having her do not disturb, I'm soaking in the bath time, the youngest is doing her homework, and the eldest is still asleep.

But if it is all finally kept in one database, then these stats would be literaly just a click away, and also easily shared.

The Club does of course keep a basic detail record of all cars - member and non-member on the Club database.

The mark historian initiative pioneered by Brian G and Julian C (now expanded to all marks) - as stated - is meant to pro-actively search out and record a more complete record of cars or if possible each car, with any new discoveries being fed back into the database via the Membership Sec.

In setting this up, it was always a concern that there should not be two (or more) databases. To this end (at least in my understanding) the mark historians all use a common forma for the there records, making it possible to combine all recorded information and link the result to the existing car register. At least that was the plan!

Grahame's suggestion of a central (exchange) location would seem to be a proving step in this direction. While also being aware that a deal of information is not currently held digitally, I will be glad to make a web directory available for the purpose and perhaps the mark historians will contact me on how to take this forward.

Well I'm pleased to say they cashed my cheque last week and today I got copies of all the registration documents showing the previous owners of PGY 161L. Just need to go through them and put names & dates of owners together and update my info for the marque historian.

Only one interesting fact I can see so far is that the car was originally Blue and was resprayed Green in 1981.

Everything comes to he who waits!

Derek
