arent these special cars
do you not think that owning a gilbern is a bit special?
no one under 30 yrs old has ever seen one, wherever you drive them they turn heads, theres very few left , out of 1000 or so odd cars, if they do get admired from 40 yr old plus people theres always a conversation about, whats that car ? or is that a gilbern? i luv em , theyre very special, do you not think..

I like the look I get when I overtake people on the motorway.

well as a 30 year old (and only just), my two and a half years of ownership has been something of an education to me, but also to everyone around me!
I love Gilberns!!

Re: arent these special cars
On the way to the Birthday Run last month we stopped for fuel at services near Newark just off the A1 and guy asked what car it was, "GIlbern" says me......"ah...thought so" says he......." my old class mate from school and his Dad have three"......."where says I"......"they run their own garage at Brant Broughton"........that was only 5 miles away and we'd passed it on way, only about 15 miles from our home!
So you never know, they are still out there. I don't know if they are members of the GOC or not, but there's a very nice pub there that does good meals but you have to book well in advance, so me thinks an evening meal out one sunny summer evening and go find this high street garage with 3 Gilberns sitting around

Re: arent these special cars
This brings us back to knowing where GOC members are, Data Protection act et all.
I hope the owners of those cars are GOC members and readers of his forum. If they are perhaps they will post a reply. If not Wayne it's your duty to boldly go a seek out new new members and life forms
To infinity and beyond in the name of the GOC
(Sorry, just been to see the new Star Trek movie
)

Just been on Google Earth and found the garage in Brant Boughton. Two gilberns parked up around the back. Ones got a cracked windscreen and the other looks like the frame needs welding.
cant see a GOC sticker !!

Wayne,
Just seen your birthday run pics and wondered how you managed to get a tilt and slide(?)
sunroof in your car.
Only ever seen Webasto/Britax or the dreaded glass hatches up to now.

There are those in the Club who are making it their business to both trace cars (and their history) and if possible get them back on the road with new owners. So with reports of finds like this, any details of identification or contacts would be greatly appreciated

If these cars are unknown to the club, then I will make it my business to pop over and make contact and get the info. The guy said they were class mates and the friends father had them then and the guy at the petrol station looked late 40's, so they may well be totally lost cars.
Does the club have a facility to search for members by home town? Brant Broughton isn't that common a name.

I'm afraid I can't take the credit for it, the guy who restored the car before I bought it off him did it. I've been asked to do an article about the mod and I contacted him to see if he would either do the article, of send me the photos and info so I could pen something. He replied with enthusiasm, but nothing came of it
It's from out of a 3 series BMW. He cut out the whole roof including webasto roof a couple of inches in from the front screen and side gutter and along the joint at the rear screen and put in the whole BMW roof ! So I can go on Gilbern runs and claim to be a "tin top"
He did a wonderful job. You can just see a slight line where the join is and thats after four years. The headlining inside is very good also, all done new and looks very in period. It is actually a manual crank webasto sunroof still. I use the tilt bit all the time, because it just sucks all the heat out of the car.
Are you attending national day? I hope to be there seeing as it's only 5 miles from where I was born

Just done a quick search and can find no members past or present for Brant Broughton, so it looks like these may be "new" finds...
Please try and get some details of them..
You will have to chase up the chap who did the roof as that would be an article I would love to read.

Re: arent these special cars
I went over to Brant Broughton yesterday evening and had a ride around the village.....and around.....and around.....no sign of a garage.....eventually found someone to ask and what is now a joiners workshop used to be the village garage but closed down years ago! So it was a dead end, no Gilberns lying around to be discovered

Re: arent these special cars
i was looking the other day at wickpedia at some classic car production numbers, 1600 e cortina around 56,000
triumph stag 26000, mgb 512,000 , and heres our old gilberns with a staggering total of 1009 or thereabouts, makes me proud to own one and talk about em at car shows. i rekon the car numbers are left today are around the same as lancias, or something similar, my local car show told me a thing or two about our beloved gilbern........i was the only one there, there were triumphs,mg.s,morris, austin, fords, galore. but not 1 gilbern..
