Invader engine transplants?

Postby Daddy Giraffe » Sat Jun 06, 2009 12:13 am

I wonder if any of you out there have carried out, or considered, an engine transplant for a 3 litre.
If so, what engine was chosen, and why?
I believe I saw a Rover V8 engined Invader at a club display at Brands many years ago, and wonder if the practise is more common nowadays.
I imagine that enormous increases in power would not be a great idea without totally upgrading everything else, but a nice 165-195bhp V6 without the weight of the Essex would be nice.
Alfa's 2.5-3.0 V6 springs to my mind, but what others could be considered?

Hello Daddy -

There are several V8 conversions on the go, as well as a few with the Cologne V-6, which is about 75 lbs lighter than the Essex; one of these is Lionel Oddy's Concours-winning 2.9 Cosworth-powered car (which also has nitrous injection).

One of my current projects is to install a Cologne 4.0 litre, with an A4LD autobox.

Give Phil Ivimey a call, he's done several conversions

Hello Daddy

I have a 4.6 Rover V8 fitted to my mark 3. The brakes have been uprated to cope with the additional power with vented discs all round, and a Quaife ATB fitted. The brake conversion was supplied by Capri sports and they have several options available for the mark 3.

Please do not ask me how it drives as this is a sore point. I have been waiting for a set of wheels to be delivered but when they finally arrived and I did some measuring, theere was insufficient clearance for the discs. They have been returned for additional machining. Was hoping to briing it to National Day but looking unlikely.

Hi,
For the sake of 'fuel efficiency', suitable for unleaded fuel and lack of temperament without losing the V6 character, I am considering fitting a fuel injected German Ford 2.9 12V engine and 5-speed MT75 gearbox into one of my estates for a daily car. I have these sitting in my shed.
Any modification will have to be minimal so that I can refit the Essex and overdrive box in the future.
The exhaust headers will be fun but the installation of the basic (non-catalytic convertor) injection system and electrics holds no fear. The MT75 is not designed to take a sliding spline propshaft so have machined an adapter to fit a shortened Land Rover prop (in-built sliding spline). The gear lever comes through the tunnel in a similar location so will need to be modified as per the standard Gilbern unit.
Another plus for the German engine unit is that they finally dispensed with the fibre cam gear drive!
