Genie Overdrive Swirch

Postby Fred » Tue Apr 20, 2010 8:55 pm

Silly question time folks - where is or rather where should the overdrive switch be on a Genie? I'm assuming the answer is a toggle switch on the centre console, is that correct? And if so where has mine gone?

Hi Fred
On my early Genie G1026 the O/D switch is attached to the gear stick, and is a click on , click off type unit
held in place with an aluminium clip.
On an early Estate I had, it was also in this position , but is a flick switch, and again held on with a clip.
on my later estate its on the steering column.
Hope this helps,
Croc

Fred, not a silly question; From my notes early cars were fitted with a switch facing forwards on the gearbox lever. About finger length down the gear lever. So that you could operate it whilst changing gear. Switch is held on to the gear lever by an aluminium clip as per "croc" says. The gear lever boot ( leather or vinyl ) was stiched around the switch.

I have not been able to establish yet the chassis no, where it moved to several different locations in 1968? One is long armed switch on the right of the centre consol & the other place has been a short switch on the right of the steering column.
Take your pick.
Regards Genie

I don't think the short switch on the column was original!
The ones I have seen fitted, as on my Mk2 with Genie dash, are a long wand (100mm 4") plastic tube fitted onto the serrated metal stub from the switch with the normal toggle in the end and comes straight from the MGB pre-gearlever switch.

Thanks for the info. I initially was operating a lever on the column to try to engage overdrive, only sometime later did I realise that this was the dip switch!! Was told that the overdrive works on the car when I bought it but it was off the road at the time so I didn't get to drive it, will I ever learn?
Will spend the weekend crawling around under the beast and try following any wires that exist. By the way I crawled under last night just to see if there was an overdrive unit there, thankfully there is.

On my early (G1018) Genie, the overdrive switch is the bottom toggle switch nearest the driver's left knee on the console, with a yellow telltale.
