Gilberns at Wiscombe

Postby Tree man » Thu Mar 24, 2011 10:02 pm

After what I believe is a gap of over 5yrs a Gilbern will be back at the Wiscombe on the 21st & 22nd May - namely me in my Genie. I've a warm up event at MIRA (Nuneaton) on the 14th and then assuming nothing major has occurred I'll add a bit more hillclimbing history to the marque. What time should I set myself to beat :?:

Hi Treeman,
Good to know a Gilbern will be back at Wiscombe again, if you can do 53.00 you won't be doing too bad, however Nigel 'The Master' Ellis did it in 47.08 in 1995 which is still the record for a Gilbern as far as I am aware.

Best of luck

What a great weekends entertainment! A very challenging hill in the dry, very iffy in the wet. Took me a while to get into he swing of things, what prompted me to pull my finger out was that I was being beaten by a couple of MX5's (oh the shame  ) Finally got it together for the last run and recorded a 50.29 -well off the Gilbern record but I can see it in the distance More horsepower and a better driver required for next year. I would recommend visiting the hill as a driver or a spectator as it's a fantastic setting, stunning veiws over the Devon countryside and a more friendly lot you couldn't meet.
I took a video, unfortunately with my old camara as I left the new one at home and so the quality is not brilliant. I'll post a link over over the next week.
Curborough, near Litchfield, next on the 12th June

Well done, thanks for the update. Maybe we should have a motor sports section in the Gilblog to keep all these snippets in one place.

Hi Treeman,
Really enjoyed the You Tube film, who was running the event that weekend and where can I get a programme? I have been trying to get copies of the programmes for all the years that a Gilbern has run at Wiscombe, it would be a shame not to get a 2011 edition now. Please advise as and when you can.

Regards Brian.

P.S. Does anybody have a spare 1962 programme?

Hi Brian..

A 1962 programme, evidently a very rare beast as even the collectors dont seem to have one either http://www.progcovers.com/motor/wiscombe.html.

Hi Grahame,

Thanks for that, the search goes on for the Holy Grail. 1962 was the first AMOC meeting at Wiscombe and of course the first running of a Gilbern on the hill, 533 UPH was only a few months old when it was put through it's paces by Ray Eve and Rex Hardy who shared the car at the event, Rex was number 11 and Ray was number 23.
