Cosworth YB into a MK3 Invader?

Postby mk3_invader » Wed Jun 08, 2011 12:52 pm

Just wondering whether its been done before or whether it would fit? I don't currently own an Invader but after reading an article in Retro Rides I have fallen in love with the shape and style of the car. Reading into the history of Gilbern and seeing the activity on the forum has really impressed me, how could I not have heard about them before? :)

Hi Will

I own the MK III with the black bonnet in the Retro Cars magazine. The other car, owned by Lionel, has a Cosworth BOA 24v 2.9l engine out of the Grananda with NOX. To say it doesn't hang around is an understatement!

There is also a chap in Wales who used to rally an Escort Cosworth until he wrote it off. He is now transferring the engine and running gear into a mk III - oh yes. He is planning to rally it, so watch this space!

Welcome to the club :)

Good to know it fits, a friend of mine has just acquired a Cosworth 2.9 bob engine whatever that is to fit into his Mk 3 Capri, its looks huge compared to the V6 Essex... I would have put money on it not fitting into a Gilbern but what do I know..

If you want a proper motor the 5Ltr Ford Small Block fits quite nicely, its smaller than the Rover V8 that other people have fitted.

Cheers for the replies always good to get enthusiastic responses :D The YB seemed a good choice as it weighs less than the Essex. According to wiki the Mk3 with Essex weighs 903kg, the Essex itself weighs 150kg whereas the YB only weighs 125kg. Meaning that a Mk3 with YB would only weigh 878kg with a minimum of 201BHP!! Physics dictates that it should shift like s**t of a shovel

I haven't looked at the gearbox and LSD options yet, what are most people running to help deliver extra power to their Invaders?

Thanks again for the replies.

Hello Will

I have a 4.6 Rover V8 in my Mark 3 coupled to a T5 gearbox. Preferred this one to the LT 77 gearbox which I originally tried. I had the standard rear axle converted by Quaif which is a relatively inexpensive option and of course no further mods needed to get it to fit.
