Next question then....springs or shocks?

Postby Reddi-Eng » Mon Feb 25, 2008 7:28 pm

Having sorted out the backs of the seats...........

One of the many points my tester raised was that the off-side rear suspension required considerable more force to compress than the near-side. Not a MOT fail but detrimental to handlng.

He said the shock absorbers must be miss-adjusted but my thoughts were that the springs themselves may be different rates. Am I off track?
Regards,

Derek

Not necessarily. The difference being that shocks will not support a load, only resist position change (unless they're or something else is seized).

Without resorting to spanners a simple test is apply the same load, slowly two both sides (one at a time) and measure the wheel deflection. In practical terms, on level ground, jack each wheel up by a set amount. If the deflection is wildly different from side to the other, the springs don't match.

Hi there,

Just had this problem with my GT - I think.

Passed the MOT but one side of the rear end is softer and sits lower over the wheel.

The car has new shocks form the club so I guess it must be the springs(?).

Is there any way of confirming this / are the springs marked in any way ..

Al.
