Mallory park

Postby Tree man » Sat Jun 05, 2010 8:31 pm

A quick update on my Genie's latest motorsport outing. The Auto 66 club organised a sprint at Mallory park in Leicestershire (if you have never been I recommend it, very friendly and great veiwing). We were to use the whole circuit including all the chicanes, these are normally reserved for motorbikes to keep the speeds down but the event included a variety of bikes.
The weather was dreadful with constant heavy rain only letting up later in the day and the organisation was a bit slack leading to plenty of confusion throughout the day. I was well off the pace most of the day being easily beaten by most of the cars in my class. The competition tyres couldn't shift the water quick enough and a very stiff set up meant I was skating all over the place. Cars with road tyres and suspension coped far better. However as the day dried (just wet instead of drowning) I was knocking far more seconds of my times than the opposition and squeeked home with the fastest time of the day in my class :D . Incidently a friend in an old Mini Cooper was streets ahead of my time and some quite exotic machinery (luckily he was in a different class) which he put down to having a car that could cope with the very tight chicanes.
Unfortunately I received no trophy as because of a mix up in the classes by the organisers the second place runner was offered the trophy and left before the mistake was identified :(
I will be defending my class lead in the HSA championship with my next outing at Doune in Scotland (19th 20th June) and then Prescott Hill Climb (26th 27th June)

Unfortunately due to the confusion on the day and the appalling weather any pictures I took were not worth saving. However a fellow HSA competitor keeps a blog (address above) on which is a report of the day including a picture of yours truly. I'll expect to have some decent pictures from Doune and Prescott, weather and organisation permitting.
An aside to the days racing was that the wayward handling was in apart attributable to the coil over conversion on the front which developed a potentially serious, if easy to fix, fault. If I knew the issues I would have with this conversion I would have bought a car with the standard lever arm set up instead. Toot, toot!
